Every single week we get rams coming in that have been repaired with poor quality copies of decent hydraulic ram seals. I have no doubt that when they were fitted, they looked OK. But if the fitter would look a little closer, maybe compare them to the seals that were taken out, very often it is obvious the the newer seals are of inferior quality. But, I hear you say, ‘They were very cheap’. Well you might be right. If the application is mild, then you might get away with them. You will have saved a few quid on a hydraulic ram seals kit. But what if they fail? What if the application was just to much for them? The seals are not so cheap now, are they? Here’s a thought… the seal manufacturers don’t spend millions of pounds a year on research for nothing. They know that the more modern machine demands stronger, newer seal design. So if you go and stick in that bright blue cheap plastic ring, what chance have you got? The country is flooded with crappy hydraulic ram seals. But there are a few good seal companies, but even then you have to specify the high quality seals when ordering. They may cost more, but if they are fitted properly, they are worth it. Some seals are easy to identify, while other hydraulic ram seals look like exhibits in the science museum. And what material is it made of? Black does not necessarily mean rubber.
